Custom Orthotics Q&A

What are custom orthotics?

Custom orthotics are shoe inserts specifically designed for your feet. They look similar to the inserts and heel pads at the pharmacy or grocery but are made with higher quality materials and help to address certain foot and ankle problems.

At Evolve Foot & Woundcare, Dr. Bingham has advanced scanning equipment onsite, letting her capture the unique dimensions of your feet and ensure a perfect fit.

Which foot and ankle problems can benefit from custom orthotics?

Dr. Bingham uses custom orthotics to treat various foot and ankle problems, including:

  • Ankle sprains
  • Foot fractures
  • Foot trauma
  • Pediatric foot injuries
  • Tendinitis
  • Flat feet
  • Heel spurs
  • Arthritis
  • Bunions
  • Hammertoe
  • Corns and calluses
  • Diabetic feet

You might benefit from custom orthotics if you have plantar fasciitis, an overuse injury that causes chronic heel pain.

Are there different types of custom orthotics?

At Evolve Foot & Woundcare, Dr. Bingham offers several types of custom orthotics, including:

Rigid orthotics

Rigid orthotics slip inside closed-toed shoes. They’re made of plastic or carbon fiber, so they’re stiff and inflexible. Rigid orthotics support the soft tissues in the arch of the foot. You might benefit from them if you have flat feet or high arches.

Soft orthotics

Soft orthotics are thick and made from padded, squishy materials. They’re bulkier than rigid orthotics and are worn with special shoes. These orthotics take pressure off specific areas of the foot, such as plantar warts, the heels, or diabetic ulcers.

What is the process for getting custom orthotics?

Dr. Bingham reviews your medical records, asks about your symptoms, and completes a podiatry exam. She checks the alignment of your feet, toes, and ankles; assesses your gait and posture; and refers you to Danbury Hospital for X-rays.

If Dr. Bingham determines that you can benefit from orthotics, she takes three-dimensional scans of your feet. Then, she sends your scans to a podiatry lab that uses them to manufacture custom orthotics that fit perfectly.

You return to Evolve Foot & Woundcare when your custom orthotics are ready and try them on. Dr. Bingham makes adjustments if needed and provides care instructions to keep your orthotics in top shape.
