Not all nail changes are fungus related. There are myriad of reasons for nail changes. It is extremely important to seek accurate diagnosis of any suspicious nail changes, as some nail changes are associated with certain cancers.

The medical term for nail fungus is onychomycosis. This usually starts as a white or yellow spot under the toenail. When left untreated, the condition can worsen leading to an unsightly nail. The nail becomes thickened, discolored, painful with crumbling under the nail. Toenails are particulary susceptible to nail fungus, because the fungus thrives in a warm moist environment.
