Neuropathic pain in the foot is a complex and often delibitating condition. This often arises from damage in the nervous system. The purpose of this blog is to discuss the effects that diabetes have on the peripheral nervous system. The nerves in the peripheral nervous system, ( anatomic locations outside the brain and spinal cord), are affected by chronically high blood glucose levels. This in turn leads to burning, numbness, tingling, shooting, pins and needles type pain in the feet, legs and sometimes the hands. Very often my patients are unable to adequately described the pain. The pain is usually most bothersome at nights. Often times when patients are trying to get some rest ( more on this in another blog). The pain does make it difficult for patients to carry out daily task leading to additional health complications.
